Instant Pot Tilapia is so easy to make and really delicious. We live in Louisiana and we have plenty of great seafood restaurants that serve fresh fish nearby. You can get really delicious seafood dinners with pasta but the cost is a bit out of our price range. Instead we were able to make Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Tilapia with a side of inexpensive pasta that came out just as good as eating out at a restaurant for half of the price. 😊 I think next time we will try using some of a Instant Pot Fish Recipe with a little taco seasoning on Taco Tuesday to change the menu up a bit! Maybe we will have a Instant Pot Fish Tacos Recipe for you soon….

We cooked our Tilapia in a foil packet on top of the trivet that came with our Instant Pot. (I think this is the easiest way to cook fish fillets.) It was very simple to put together and you can even use parchment paper instead of foil if you prefer. No need to purchase a steamer basket. Just fold foil to make a little boat then place it on top of the trivet and it works just fine.
We use the 8 qt. Instant Pot to prepare all our meals.
We also use a digital cooking thermometer like this. If you have any questions about what temperature something should be cooked at or reheated at you can check out FoodSafety.gov. That’s what we use.
Can I use parchment paper in an Instant Pot?
You can absolutely use parchment paper in an Instant Pot. For this recipe, you can use one really large piece of parchment paper. Place your Tilapia in the middle of the paper. Next, sprinkle your seasoning of choice on your fish then place a couple of spoonfuls of butter on top of tilapia fillets. Next, seal your parchment paper on all sides and place it on top of your rack or trivet in the Instant Pot. You can look at the images below for reference.
Ingredients – Instant Pot Tilapia
- 1 – 2 lbs. Tilapia Fillets
- Spoonfuls of butter
- Tony Chachere’s Seasoning
- Parchment paper
- or, piece of foil
- 1 cup of water
- Lemon Juice or Lemon Zest
Instructions – Instant Pot Tilapia
#1. First, place your tilapia fillets on a large piece of parchment paper or aluminum foil.
#2. Next, season tilapia fillets with your seasoning of choice. (We like Tony Chachere’s)
#3. Then, place spoonfuls of butter on top of the tilapia fillets. Optional – add a few squirts of lemon juice.
#4. Close the parchment paper around your tilapia sealing every side. Or, make a sling or boat with your foil and build the sides up to make a wall. See image below for reference.
#5. Next, place 1 cup of water in bottom of the instant pot.
#6. Then place the trivet in your Instant Pot.
#7. Next, place foil packet or parchment paper packet on top of the trivet.
#8. Close lid and turn the steam release valve to “sealing” position.
#9. Next, press the pressure cook button. Then press pressure level button until high pressure is selected. Set the timer for 8 minutes of cooking time.
#10. After the timer beeps to let it you know it has completed turn the steam release valve to “venting” for a quick pressure release. This is different from a natural pressure release when you let the steam naturally escape the instant pot before turning the valve to “venting”. **Warning – The steam is very hot, use a towel to turn the release valve so it does not burn you.
#11. Serve and enjoy!
Final Thoughts
With such a quick prep, short cook time, and also the dishwasher safe Instant Pot lid and inner pot we are able to cook a delicious dinner with hardly any mess to clean up at all. That is why we love creating new recipes with our Instant Pot. We also store our leftovers for lunch the next day in an airtight container like these ->food storage containers.
